In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Knuckles guides the heroes to the Gigan Rocks, relates the local legend to the others, and translates the ancient script at the ruins there, which explains some of the game's backstory.

Downplayed in Shadow the Hedgehog, where Knuckles appears as the Hero Mission guide in the Glyphic Canyon stage, trying to kill the invading the Black Arms.

Downplayed in the Sonic Adventure duology, where Knuckles' stages all use Treasure Hunt gameplay, but Knuckles is only doing this as part of being a guardian rather than treasure hunting for its own sake.

Adaptational Intelligence: Knuckles' original concept in Japan was always supposed to be that he was gullible and short-tempered, but early American manuals and even internal documents described him as clever or intelligent.However, his snout is short and his mouth is underneath it. He is an echidna, an animal that is supposed to have a beak-like snout. However, despite these traits, he's a nice guy, and more than willing to abandon his post to help out his friends. Because of spending most of his life on a secluded island, he naturally prefers to be by himself and has quite the wild temper. So naturally, they tend to butt heads, but do get along occasionally. If Sonic is like the wind, then Knuckles is like the mountains stern and unmovable. Afterward, the piece of the shrine became Angel Island. Turns out, Knuckles is the last of the echidnas after they were wiped out for attempting to use the Emeralds and desecrating the shrine (and injuring numerous Chao) which angered the at-the-time guardian Chaos. Not much of his past was known, but that changed with Sonic Adventure which fleshed out his background quite a bit. Afterward, Knuckles would then be one of the duo's chief allies in fighting Eggman, but his guardian duties keep him out of the action most of the time. Near the end of the game, Eggman betrays Knuckles and steals the Master Emerald himself, which forced Knuckles to accept Sonic and Tails' help in getting it back. He was first introduced as an antagonist in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, having been told by Eggman that Sonic and Tails intended to steal the Master Emerald.
